One of the biggest shocks for seniors planning for their long-term care is how expensive care facilities can be. At-home care and assisted living costs vary depending on the level of care required, but nursing homes are usually the most expensive since they provide hands-on, round-the-clock care. Here’s what to expect when it comes to nursing home costs in 2022.

Nursing Home Costs by State in 2022

Each year, Genworth compiles a Cost of Care Survey revealing the median costs of long-term care facilities in the U.S. You can utilize this resource to gauge how much you or your loved one might have to pay for care. Based on the recently released 2021 survey, the median cost for a semi-private nursing home room in the U.S. is $7,908/month. Since this data is from 2021, facility costs will likely continue to increase throughout 2022.

Private vs. Semi-Private Nursing Home Rooms

Why are we focusing on the cost of a semi-private room rather than a private room? Although private rooms may be an option for some seniors, it’s important to note that Medicaid typically only covers the cost of a semi-private room. That is, unless a private room is deemed to be medically necessary. So, if you or your loved one is interested in pursuing Medicaid benefits, you will typically have a semi-private room. That said, some states allow the resident’s family to supplement the cost of a private room by paying the difference not covered by Medicaid.
